If you have damaged drywall in your home, whether it’s from a disgruntled teenager or a doorknob gone rogue, repairing it safely and quickly is critical to ensuring it still does a good job at protecting your home. Here are some of our best tips for repairing damaged drywall in your home.
Prepare the Patch and Hole
First, cut a piece of drywall that is the same thickness as the damaged drywall area. Cut out a square that is big enough to cover the entire hole. Put the patch over the hole and pencil the outline of the wall. Draw an X above the hole and an arrow on the drywall patch pointing towards it. Use a drywall saw to cut from the drywall hole to the edges of the outline and score along the outline. Snap away the drywall pieces that are damaged and cut.
Add the Strapping and the Patch
Cut out a piece of wood strapping 6 inches longer than the length of the hole. Use a small bit of construction adhesive to adhere the wood to the other side of the wall and use two screws to screw it into the wall. Align your drywall patch and press it against the adhesive, Again, use two screws to anchor it.
Cover the Seams
Use a taping knife to put a thin layer of joint compound over the surface of the patch, the seams, and the screw heads themselves. Use a small piece of window screen to push into the compound to stop cracks from forming. Add more joint compound and then remove the excess. Once everything is dry, you can repaint and refinish the wall so that it matches the rest of the room.
