Protecting Drywall from Mold

Drywall Mold

Dealing with mold isn’t fun. It’s best to prepare for drywall mold before it happens.

Even if you’ve never dealt with the aftermath of basement flooding or a leaky pipe personally, trust us when we say that wet drywall is never a good thing and drywall mold is especially never a good thing! Thankfully, there are many different easy ways that you can protect your drywall from drywall mold, including mold-resistant drywall.

Mold Resistant Drywall 101

Regular drywall typically has small amounts of moisture that, when combined with a little additional moisture, can turn into drywall mold. Mold can spread very rapidly through the thin paper coating and take over your basement before you know it. Mold-resistant drywall is made without paper, so that mold cannot easily colonize and spread throughout the area. It isn’t totally waterproof, but it does absorb less moisture.

The Price Difference

Mold resistant drywall is slightly more expensive than traditional drywall (but much less expensive than replacing an entire room’s worth of drywall). Protecting moisture-rich areas of your home like bathrooms and basements from drywall mold is worth the slight extra cost. There are several different types of mold resistant drywall on the market, so if the first brand you see is out of your price range don’t count it out just yet. The pros at Absolute Drywall also offer extremely affordable rates for moisture resistant drywall and installation to keep your home dry and in great condition.

The Right Location

Mold resistant drywall is most appropriate in places where excess water is common and places prone to flooding. Basements, garages, kitchens, and bathrooms are all the perfect spots for it. Do you have areas of your home that sometimes have condensation on the walls? If you have a major moisture problem, it’s worth calling in the pros for some extra help. In addition to drywall that’s resistant to drywall mold, also add a vapor-barrier and insulation to the walls for additional protection.
